Here is a chance to get more involved in your beautiful city!
While the City Council recently made appointments to the City's boards, commissions, and committees, there are a few positions currently vacant and a number of seats that will become vacant on July 1, 2024 pursuant to the recent appointments. The City of Monterey is accepting applications from Monterey residents for these volunteer positions on boards, commissions, and committees.   View (and please share) the Flyer!
Who can apply? 
Residents of the City of Monterey are encouraged to apply.
What seats are available to be filled?
  • Appeals Hearing Board – One alternate seat (current vacancy)
  • Architectural Review Committee – One seat (upcoming vacancy effective July 1, 2024)
  • Building and Housing Appeals Board – One alternate seat (upcoming vacancy effective July 1, 2024)   Please see application for specifics on required qualifications.
  • Neighborhood and Community Improvement Program (NCIP) Committee
    • One representative each for the following neighborhoods: Naval Support Activity Monterey (current vacancy), Presidio of Monterey (current vacancy)
    • One alternate each for the following neighborhoods: Aguajito Oaks (current vacancy), Monterey Vista (current vacancy), Naval Support Activity Monterey (current vacancy), Presidio of Monterey (current vacancy)

  • Parks and Recreation Commission – One seat (upcoming vacancy effective July 1, 2024)
How can Monterey residents apply? Is there a deadline? 
Application materials are provided below and can be completed online. Applications will be accepted on an ongoing basis until the positions are filled. Priority review will be given to applications received by noon (12 p.m.) on Friday, July 12, 2024.
What happens after applications are received?
As they come in, applications will be redacted and made available online for public transparency in this folder: Boards and Commissions Applications (Redacted) until appointments are made. In accordance with Council policy, Mayor Williamson will review each application and interview applicants, then make recommendations based on each applicant’s interests and skills, Councilmember district representation, and the specific needs of each body at the time of appointment. Appointments are made for four-year terms.

How can I participate?
Resident participation and involvement are key to the success of our City. Community members provide insights that are vital to the decision-making process. Residents of Monterey may serve on a City board, commission or committee. And anyone may attend public meetings, submit comments in writing, and review meeting agendas and documents. Unless otherwise noted, board, committee, and commission meetings are held in the City Council Chamber at the corner of Pacific and Madison streets. Agendas are posted outside of the Chamber and online at I-SEARCH Monterey at least 72 hours before a regularly scheduled meeting and at least 24 hours before a special meeting.

How can I apply?

Per City Council policy, the City Clerk accepts applications to boards, committees, and commissions when there are vacancies due to term expirations or unexpected changes in membership.  Vacancies are posted on the Boards, Commissions, and Committees webpage and emailed to the Boards and Commissions Interest List on each occasion that there are new vacancies. Who is eligible?
Residents of the City of Monterey are eligible to serve on Monterey boards, commissions, and committees. Members are appointed by the City Council for four-year terms. In addition to residency there are special eligibility requirements for the Historic Preservation Commission (more information, CLG professional qualifications PDF), Disabled Access Appeals Board (more information), Building and Housing Appeals Board (more information), and Neighborhood and Community Improvement Program (NCIP) Committee (more information, NCIP map PDF).
How do I know when a project is up for review?
Commission & committees agendas outline what projects are being considered. Agendas are posted at City Hall and are available online at I-SEARCH Monterey.  Plans for developments are available for public review in the Planning Office on the lower level of Colton Hall. Staff reports may be reviewed there as well, or online, prior to a public hearing.
