Overview of hiring process
Submit Application
A City of Monterey application is required and must be accompanied by a supplemental questionnaire indicating your status as a Lateral candidate. Police Officer Trainee candidates must take the written exam and physical agility test prior to submitting an application.  The City of Monterey does not administer the Law Enforcement entrance assessment testing, however we will accept scores from any POST participating agency. The closest testing facility to Monterey is run by South Bay Regional Public Safety Training Consortium (SBRTC). For more information on testing through SBRTC, please visit the SBRTC website at

Oral Board Examination
Oral boards will be scheduled by Human Resources. 

Chief's Interview
Each candidate who successfully passes the Oral Board Examination can expect to have a Chief's interview. This interview may or may not be immediately following the Oral Board Examination.

Background Investigation
Upon the Chief's review, candidates may enter the background investigation phase of the process.
