Exemptions
Any owner who owns and manages three (3) or fewer rental units within the boundaries of the City is exempt from the registration requirements established by Section 8-2.02 and from the payment of Rental Inventory Fees required by Section 8.2-03. These owners are still required to file a claim of exemption. Property owners with subsidized units,  accessory dwelling units (ADUs), owner-occupied, or mobile homes, are still required to register their properties, however they are exempt from the registration fees. Property owners claiming an exemption must file their claim using the same link and choose the Rental Exemption arrow.

City Council is working to ensure a fair and transparent rental housing market in Monterey, and your participation is vital to the success of this program. All City of Monterey residents will be notified by mail about this new program. Drop-in assistance sessions are being scheduled and details will be posted soon. Please call the Rental Inventory Assistance Hotline at (831) 242-8740 or email rentalinventory@monterey.org with any questions. Please also refer to the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ).
